Split Stitch

A photo of a needle embroidering split stitch in blue thread on white fabric.

Split Stitch is great for creating smooth, curved lines without leaving gaps between stitches - and it’s easy to do, too!

I used 6 strands of thread for this video - but I normally use 2 to 4 strands for Split Stitch.

  1.  Start with a single stitch - between 0.5 and 1cm long.
  2. Bring your needle up right in the middle of your first stitch, splitting the strands of thread…then go forward and create another stitch.
  3. Repeat! Come up in the middle of your previous stitch - then go forward to create your next stitch.

Make sure your needle splits the thread, rather than passing between strands - and try to keep all of your stitches similar lengths.

Easy!
