How to Separate Embroidery Threads (without getting tangled!)
One of the most frustrating things when you're starting out in embroidery is your thread tangling up. If I can do anything to avoid it, you can bet that I'll give it a try!
This can happen most when you're separating out strands of thread - so, I've made a tutorial to help you out!
It's all about the clamp and twist...I'll explain.
Embroidery thread is made up of 6 separate strands - and they're all twisted together to make the one piece of thread. The twisting is what can create the tangles when you're separating threads from each other!
Here's my trick:
First, splay out the end of your thread, so you can see all 6 of the separate strands.
Gently try to pinch the number of strands that you need to separate (often some will naturally clump together, so use those if the numbers are right!). Hold these strands between your thumb and forefinger.
Then, use another finger (on the same hand) to clamp the remaining threads against the base of your thumb.
Then - this is key - use your other hand to slowly twist the thread. The strands should start to separate out naturally.
If you're working with a long piece of thread, you can use a finger as a stopper, move your clamping hand down the length of thread, and then keep twisting.
Easy!
